Fractions and Decimals Made Simple

Posted By: carolnotes

Fractions represent a part of a whole. A fraction has a numerator (top) and a denominator (bottom).

Converting Between Fractions and Decimals

  • Fraction to decimal: divide the numerator by the denominator. Example: 3/4 = 0.75
  • Decimal to fraction: write the decimal over its place value. Example: 0.6 = 6/10 = 3/5

Adding and Subtracting Fractions

You need a common denominator before you can add or subtract fractions.

  1. Find the Least Common Denominator (LCD)
  2. Rewrite each fraction using the LCD
  3. Add or subtract the numerators; keep the denominator the same
  4. Simplify if possible

Example: 1/3 + 1/4 = 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12

Multiplying Fractions

Multiply numerator by numerator and denominator by denominator.

Example: 2/3 × 3/5 = 6/15 = 2/5

Dividing Fractions

Flip the second fraction (take the reciprocal) and then multiply.

Example: 2/3 ÷ 4/5 = 2/3 × 5/4 = 10/12 = 5/6
